Listed Building Consent Granted for Internal Alterations in West Mersea
We are delighted that Colchester Borough Council has granted Listed Building Consent for improvements to works to a Grade 2 listed property on Mersea Island, Essex.
The property is a Grade 2 listed timber frame mid-18th century dwelling that is characterised by the use of black weather boarding and red brick to the front, with a two-storey rear wing added in the 19th century.
The proposed scheme sought internal improvements to the application site and specifically, a modern extension that had been constructed in the 1990s. This extension included the kitchen alongside a utlity room, WC and lean too log store. The extension contained a roof slope that resulted in a shortened door height that was impractical and had an internal layout that did not meet the needs of modern family living.
The proposed improvements sought a new ‘cat-slide’ roof that would allow for a full height door and as a result, better access. The introduction of Velux windows within the ‘cat-slide’ roof ensured that the extension had increased light and a usable space that was more practical for modern living. The proposals also included the enclosure and covering of the log store with black weatherboarding to ensure that the extension sits harmoniously with the dwellinghouse.
We are pleased that the Council agreed that these works would be acceptable in the context of the listed building status, ensuring that the extension sits harmoniously with the historic element of the property, and to ensure that the works would enhance the internal living environment with a more functional layout.
