Hospital Redevelopment, Witham
A D P acted as the planning consultant and architect to secure the conversion of the existing hospital building into 36 dwellings, together with the erection 2 further family homes and a new office.
The hospital building is a listed building and local historic landmark in Witham, being a former Union Workhouse that was originally constructed in 1839. The building was subsequently used as school before becoming a hospital between 1948 and 2003.
Given this sites importance, the conversion required a sensitive treatment. We undertook a thorough contextual and historic analysis of the site. This together with a detailed site inspection of the building condition informed a clear design philosophy for the site. The historic buildings were retained for residential re-use and the conversions have been made to sensitively reflect the character of the original buildings.
This conversion has proved to be a very popular development within the town.
