Planning Approved for a Barn Extension and Alterations in Colchester

We are pleased to have secured planning permission for the extension and alterations to an existing barn on the edge of Colchester, Essex.

The barn had previously had Class Q permission for its change of use, but the proposed barn conversion was not fully fit for purpose. Our client sought an extension to increase the amount of useable living space, garden area and various extensions and alterations to improve the environmental performance of the building.

These works are not possible under the Class Q process.

The alterations to the barn included:

  • Extension - An extension to the existing single element to facilitate the creation of a workshop, studio space and garden and bike store.

  • Cladding - The extension, together with the existing single storey element, to be clad to reflect the character of the existing barn.

  • Insulation - It is proposed to provide external insulation to improve the energy performance of the building.

  • Solar Panels – To install solar panel to the roof of the main barn.

  • Garden Area - Creation of a modest decking area to the rear of the main barn to utilise views over the countryside.

  • Installation of A/C units and ground source heat pumps

The Council agreed that that these interventions would respect and enhance the character of the building and subsequently approved the planning application.
