Farm Redevelopment in Colchester is Approved
We recently secured planning permission for the demolition of the existing farm buildings in Layer De La Haye, Colchester and the erection 4 no. detached bungalow dwellings.
The application site comprised a redundant farm complex that contained a number of existing buildings including an existing house, various barns, poultry sheds, horse walker, garages, and general-purpose sheds. The site already had an outline planning consent. A D P were then approached to design the scheme and manage the reserved matters planning application process.
The character of the site was one of having a ‘rural character’, in the remote surroundings of open fields and agricultural land. The site is situated a considerable distance from the nearest residential properties and sits within its own context.
The design concept for the proposed farm redevelopment was loosely influenced by arrangements and forms which would be typically found in a traditional East Anglian farm complex i.e. buildings which were simple in form. All four dwelling-houses were single-storey to represent the ‘barn’ form and enable the new dwellings to sit sympathetically into their surroundings.
The individual dwellings were then articulated with a mixture of traditional and contemporary detailing. The use of traditional features gave these dwellings the impression of being a sequential form of development from agricultural buildings to dwellings. For further images please view here.
