Extension and Modifications, West Mersea

A D P were asked to provide a design and secure planning permission for the extension and modifications to an existing dwelling in West Mersea, Essex.

The existing dwelling had the enviable position of backing onto the beach, however the building did not utilise its position and contained a number of constraints including:  

• A mid-20th Century building of no architectural merit.

• The internal floor area was poorly and inefficiently laid out.

• Despite its location, the existing building did not have clear views of the beach and coastline.

• The site is located on a steep slope.  

We designed a scheme that:

• Provided a stepped response to the changing gradient.

• Increased the amount of usable open space by creating terracing.

• Created a strong rear aspect with sweeping views of the Essex Coast.

• Introduced a contemporary appearance that sits comfortably within its beach-side context.
