Extension to a Listed Building approved by Babergh District Council

We are delighted that Babergh District Council has approved an extension to a listed building in the rural area near Lavenham, Suffolk.

The Proposed Extension to the Listed Building

The application site comprises a one and a half storey cottage which formed part of a pair. Together, these cottages are both Grade II Listed C17-C18 timber-framed buildings.

The proposed scheme sought the erection of one and a half storey side extension with half hipped roof and front and rear dormers. Works included the removal of numerous unsympathetic mid-late C20 alterations, such as the existing flat roof extension, removal of an existing lean-to roof and re-instatement of gable end.

Heritage Considerations

The application was submitted with extensive evidence of the heritage and design impacts. Consequently, the Council concluded that the proposal would be a considerable improvement in design over the existing situation they would replace, which provides a heritage benefit.

They agreed that the works for the removal of the numerous unsympathetic mid-late C20 alterations and providing required maintenance to the listed building would significantly improve the external appearance of the listed building and help preserve the building from falling into a state of disrepair.
