Babergh Gives Planning Consent for an Extension in a Conservation Area

Our planning consultants have secured planning permission from Babergh District Council for an extension to a property within a Conservation Area in Stratford St Mary, Suffolk.

Context

The property is located in the village of Stratford St. Mary, Suffolk. Whilst it is not listed building, it is located centrally in the Conservation Area of Stratford St. Mary and within the setting of a Grade II listed building. The cottage contributes in a positive way to the historic evolution and visual appeal of Stratford St. Mary.

The original gambrel roofed cottage and single storey rear outshot are timber framed and date back several hundred years, although the property has been much altered. A poorly conceived second floor was added at the beginning of the 20th Century with further extensions in the 1960s.

Design Approach

As the dwelling is in a Conservation Area, the end product must enhance the visual amenity of the area. To this end the proposals sought to sympathetically extend the cottage to provide additional domestic accommodation, and incorporate appropriate building materials with a historic detail.

The proposed design is also located so that it is primarily only visible from the private side and rear of the house and would not adversely affect the setting of the Conservation Area.
